As we are all aware, this has been a difficult winter season.  To date, the inclement weather has caused five two-hour delays and seven school cancellations.  The Iowa Department of Education and Iowa Code requires public school districts to complete either 1,080 hours or 180 days of instruction each year.  Spencer Schools and the majority of school districts in the state have chosen the 1,080 hour option.

With the delays and cancellations, we are below the required hours of instruction.  In order to meet the requirements, we will be making the following adjustments to the school calendar: (As of February 26)

-We will plan to make up 5 of the 7 days missed.
-Thursday, April 18 will now be a school day with a 12:30 dismissal.
*This day was the first day of Spring Break.
-We will add four days on to the end of the year.
*May 24 will become a full day of school.
*May 28, 29, 30 will be full days of school.
*May 31 will be the last day of school with a 12:30 dismissal.
-Also, the three remaining 12:30 dismissals will now be full days of school.
*These dates are March 6, April 3, and May 1.
-Additional days missed will be added, beginning with Monday, June 3rd until we have met the instructional hours requirement.
-March 18 will not be used as a makeup day.  The District has contracted with professional development presenters for that day.

This plan was discussed and approved at the February 26 School Board Meeting.

Spencer Schools appreciates your patience and understanding regarding weather delays and cancellations. Hopefully, the worst of this winter season is behind us.
