As senior year came to a close for the recent graduates from the Class of 2017, the usual emphasis was placed on studying for finals, planning for graduation parties and celebrating all of the accomplishments of the students through various events.  For five SHS seniors, there was an additional, life-saving accomplishment that truly sets these students apart from their peers.

By donating five units of blood before graduation at both school and community blood drives, Brook Erdman, Andrew Faulkner, Nic Hoefling, Nick Sundblad and Carter Vanderah earned the Donor of Distinction award through LifeServe Blood Center.  As a Donor of Distinction, students received an honor cord, certificate of achievement and a letter of accomplishment from the LifeServe Blood Center President.

Spencer High School hosts two opportunities to give blood, and once a student turns 16, they are eligible to give.  National Honor Society (NHS) organizes a blood drive in the fall and the student council completes a second blood drive in the spring.  Additionally, there are several opportunities through the community for students to give.  For NHS sponsor, Rochelle Achenbach, donating blood is a cause close to her heart, and she said, “I am so pleased that students are doing something so selfless, and then going out of their way to go to other drives too!”

Through regular blood donation, students are demonstrating strong character, selflessness and volunteerism.  “I like to know that when I go donate blood for a short period of time, it has such a major effect on other people’s lives.  I don’t understand why more people don’t donate because it takes so little time to change someone’s life completely,” said Vanderah.  Congratulations to these students for achieving this milestone, and hopefully there will be many other students recognized for this tremendous accomplishment and honor in the future!
