Students at Spencer Middle School were on the go as Hy-Vee KidsFit trainer Daira Driftmier presented to an energetic group of 6th and 7th graders.  Driftmier shared about Hy-Vee’s commitment to helping communities make healthy choices. The free, 60-minute assembly empowered students to take care of their bodies through fun activities and proper nutrition.  Driftmier, joined by a Hy-Vee dietitian have worked with over 27,000 students, and the stop at Spencer Middle School was her 50th school assembly.

Driftmier asked students if they ever get bored when they are at home, and if so, what they do when they are bored.  Most responses revolved around screen time.  Noting that students are spending more and more time on some form of technology, Driftmier showed students the KidsFit website, www.hy-veekidsfit.com, which is available to anyone interested in wellness, and discussed the 5-Week Challenge, which provides a structure for kids to take control of their personal health and fitness.  Offering videos and information surrounding workouts, healthy eating, and family activities, the website is geared toward kids and can equip them with the tools necessary to take charge of their health.

The challenge activities are available for different fitness levels, and best of all, they are fun!  Many can also be done with partners. When Kaden, a 6th grader, was asked what he thought of the program, he said, “I like working with a partner because it is more fun than doing it by yourself.”  Driftmier went on to tell students that if they complete the 5-Week Challenge, they can qualify for prizes through Hy-Vee.

At the end of the assembly, Driftmier urged the students to take the challenge and feel the benefits of increased well-being.  After engaging in fitness activities throughout the duration of the assembly, she asked the students if they were a little tired and most importantly if they had fun, and the response from the students was a resounding, “YES!”
