During a unit centered around how different religions have influenced human society, students in Mrs. Bumgarner’s World Area class had the opportunity to experience the Islamic Artifact Box. The artifacts were made available by Buena Vista University, one of the three benefactors of items amassed through the Middle East travels of Keith Carter. Students touched and even modeled different items that are part of the Islamic culture. A camel harness and saddle, hijab, abaya, burka, and leather book covers were all part of the artifact box. While examining the items, students were challenged to consider how they tell the cultural story of the Middle East.
